How to talk to a designer when you need a new logo?

Logos are difficult! That’s right, I said it. In my opinion, logos are some of the more difficult things to design because we are not only handing someone the look of their business but we are also giving them something that will go on everything that is associated with their company. To design a successful logo we need to have the client answer important questions that will help get us there.

Do you want to know what those questions are when you’re ready to start a logo design (or redesign) project with a designer? Here’s a list we put together that will get the conversation and process going:

  1. What is the name of your business? (Seems obvious but we need to know the EXACT words and letters that need to appear as part of the logo.)

  2. Do you have a tagline?

  3. Do you have a mission statement?

  4. What is your elevator pitch?

  5. Please supply your website and social media links?

  6. Who is your main customer/audience?

  7. What customer/audience would you like to gain?

  8. What three attributes would you like your target audience to think of when looking at your branding?

  9. Who are your competitors?

  10. What sets your organization/company apart from the competition?

  11. Where do you see your organization/company in 5-10 years?

  12. What style are you looking for? Modern, traditional, technical, fun, elegant, upscale?

  13. Where and how will this logo be used? (You don’t need to know every possible iteration, but just some of the main spots such as your website, social media platforms, etc.)

  14. Do you have any colors or images in mind that you want the designer to explore? (It’s OK if you don’t.)

  15. Do you have any logos you want to send to the designer for inspiration? (They don’t have to be in the same space as your business, but sending the designer logos that you like, gives them a sense of your aesthetic.)

Additional questions if redesigning an existing logo:

  1. Why are you looking to change your current logo?

  2. What words describe how you feel when looking at your current logo and branding?

  3. What do you like and dislike about the current logo?

  4. Are there any elements from the existing logo you would like to keep and why?

  5. What do you want the new logo to accomplish that the current one is not?

We know that’s a lot of “homework” to do. But trust us, the more thought that is put into thinking about and answering the above, the more successful your logo design collaboration will be.
